How To's

Your hotel is booked, the dates are in the diary, and there is one useful reminder left to set: the cancellation deadline.
Before it passes, give the booking another look. You might be perfectly happy with it. Or you might spot a question worth asking while you still have time to change your plans.
Set aside about fifteen minutes for the checks below. Start earlier if you are waiting for an answer from the hotel.
Find the deadline in your own confirmation
Open the email or booking page for this reservation and look for the cancellation conditions. Note the date, time, time zone and any charge that applies after the deadline. Put a reminder in your calendar with enough time to act.
The details can vary between rates at the same hotel. A flexible rate and a prepaid offer may have different conditions, so use your actual confirmation. Hilton’s cancellation guidance is one example of why the rate and reservation details matter.
If the wording is unclear, ask the company managing the booking to explain it. Keep the answer with your confirmation.
Check the room you will actually get
A hotel’s main photo can be memorable. Your room category is easier to forget.
Check the category, beds, number of guests and anything included in the rate. If you need a particular arrangement, make sure the confirmation describes it. “Two rooms” and “two rooms with an internal connecting door” are different requests.
Our hotel room types guide can help you make sense of the room names. The next step is to ask about the detail that matters to you.
Revisit the reason you chose this hotel
What made this stay work for your trip? Perhaps it was the pool, the parking, a quiet room or the location near your plans.
Pick the one or two things you would miss most if they were unavailable. Check whether the information covers your dates, room and rate. A pool photograph tells you very little about whether the pool will be open during your stay. Parking may need a reservation or carry a separate charge.
Use our amenity checklist if you need help turning a feature into a practical question.
You can also inspect the stay with BookYolo and use any potential watch-outs to guide your follow-up. Essential arrangements still deserve a direct answer from the property.
Ask one clear question
A short, specific message is easier to answer than a long list of general concerns. Try this:
“Hello, I have booked [room category] for [dates]. Could you confirm whether [the feature or arrangement you need] will be available for our stay, and whether there is an extra charge? My cancellation deadline is [date], so an answer before then would help us plan.”
Send it through your official booking channel or a verified hotel contact. If the reply says a request has been noted, ask whether the arrangement is confirmed or still subject to availability.
Make the decision before time runs out
Once you have the answers, decide whether the booking still suits you. You may be happy to keep it. You may decide that an unavailable feature is worth working around. Or you may prefer to compare another stay.
Check that an alternative is available, suitable and affordable before cancelling. Then follow the cancellation process for your reservation and save the confirmation of any change.
A missing answer leaves you with uncertainty. Think about how much that particular detail matters to your trip rather than treating silence as proof that something is wrong.
Two common questions
Does every hotel booking include free cancellation?
No. Check the conditions of the rate you booked, including any deadline and penalty.
Should I check again if I change my dates or room?
Yes. Look at the new confirmation and ask whether any previous arrangements still apply. Save the updated information together.
A few deliberate checks can leave you with a clearer plan for arrival. For your next shortlist, check the stay with BookYolo before committing. Our before-booking hotel guide is another useful place to start.
